Types of Orchids – Different Orchid Varieties

Strictly spoken there are only two different types of orchids: the terrestrial and the aerial ones or epiphytics. We could add third type to the two already mentioned: the lithophytic, meaning that the orchid roots cling to rocks, although these are usually clasified as epiphytics. At any rate, many people, when speaking of orchid types refer mainly to the different orchid kinds or orchid species.

As the interest of many people who begin to be involved in orchids’ care is to know how many orchids types there are, we can say that the number of species is more than 20.000 plus around 100.000 hybrids. So we will start by enumerating a list with some of the more popular species that you can easily find in your favorite orchid supplier:

Oncidium Orchids, Phalaenopsis Orchids, Cattleya Orchids, Cymbidium Orchids, Dendrobium Orchids, Purple Dendrobium Orchids, Epidendrum Orchids, Masdevilla Orchids, Miltonia Orchids, Odontoglossum Orchids, Paphiopedilum Orchids, Vanda Orchids, the famous Dancing Lady Orchid…

If we add all the variety of existing hybrids, the list would be much larger. For instance, we can mention some of the Cattleya Orchid hybrids:

Brassolaelia, Sophrolaelia, Sophrocattleya, Brassolaelioa, Potinara, Iawanagaara and many, many more…

As for me, I prefer real and genuine natural orchids even if there are some nice hybrids, since hybrids always include an unnatural component.

How to look after orchids?

As we have seen, there is a great amount of different Orchid species (called sometimes orchid types). This variety implies that each species has different needs for water, light, fertilizer and air. Each species has also its characteristic scent.

For example, some orchid plants are wonderfully fragrant. However, their scent varies extremely. Some scents are somehow fruity, others are flowery. Some are subtle and some have a very strong fragrance.

Another very important factor for Orchids is the air circulation. Most Orchids are aerial plants and therefore their roots are not under ground like earthly plants but in a place where they can breathe… Again, the need for more or less air circulation varies from a species to another.

Fertilizers are also an important item. While some species need more feeding, some other will need less. Also bear in mind that orchid plants may need more fertilizer during growth season. Fertilizers that contain urea should be avoided. When our orchid has insufficient feeding its leaves use to become yellow. If the potting media of our orchid is dry, it is advisable to water our plant before applying the fertilizer.
